This large-scale restoration and refurbishment project delivered urgent works to the structure of the historic undercroft, and the construction of a more effective and energy-efficient museum and visitor centre.  The creation of a flexible atrium and improved visitor facilities has significantly enchanced the visitor experience, with new spaces for education, volunteers and staff.  A viewing gallery allows for an enhanced visitor experience, creating high-level views over the monastic ruins.  Greater display of collections has been possible, through environmental controlled conditions, providing interactive and digital displays, and showcasing unique collections.

HERA’s involvement in the project has been through the provision of professional advice and support to the National Lottery Heritage Fund, acting in the role of expert advisor and ongoing project monitoring support.  Our experience of capital regeneration schemes has provided help and support to all parties, mitigating and managing issues/risks, safeguarding the outputs of the project.
