Spanish City is a collection of Grade II Listed seaside buildings and pleasure grounds built in 1910 on the Whitley Bay seafront in North Tyneside.  The Rotunda building is one of the earliest examples of Hennebique ferro-concrete design and construction in the UK involving a dome construction for the roof. When built, the dome was the second largest in the country after St Paul’s Cathedral.

The project will preserve the unique history of Spanish City Dome, restoring its original features, protecting the building for the future, and promoting commercial enterprise through partnership with a private sector enterprise and through providing community space for local people and visitors alike to use and enjoy.

HERA have been involved in this National Lottery Heritage Fund restoration project since the Round 1 Grant Award, providing expert advice and guidance on the levels of funding that could be justified through a conservation deficit / viability gap appraisal.

Our role also included acting as Lead Monitors from commencement of the project, advising on project management, procurement, costs and cash flow management, funding and long-term viability.
